Included feature

Website backups: what is included and what to add

Every ODHOST shared hosting plan is backed up weekly. A good backup plan adds your own copies stored somewhere else, so you can recover from any mistake, attack or outage.

What can go wrong without backups

Bad updates

A plugin or theme update breaks the site and the old version is gone.

Hacks and malware

You need a clean copy from before the infection to restore.

Human error

Deleted pages, overwritten files or a dropped database table.

Account problems

Payment lapses, lost access or moving providers. Your own copy keeps you independent.

Follow the 3-2-1 rule

Keep three copies of your data, on two different types of storage, with one copy off site. For a website, that can mean the live site, the host’s weekly backup, and your own downloaded or cloud stored backup.

Weekly backups protect you against most disasters, but a busy store or a site you edit daily can lose a week of changes. Add more frequent backups of the database for sites that change often.

What a complete backup contains

Files (your website code, themes, plugins and uploads), databases (content, users and orders) and, if you use hosting email, mailboxes. A backup is only proven when you have restored it once, so test a restore to a subdomain occasionally.

How do I restore a backup?

You can restore your own backups through the control panel or your CMS plugin. To restore from the weekly server backup, open a support ticket. See restoring a backup.

How often should I back up?

Match frequency to how often your site changes. A brochure site can rely on weekly backups; a store taking daily orders should back up its database daily.

Do backups include email?

A full control panel backup can include mailboxes. Plugin backups usually cover only the website files and database.
